A Redware Tutorial....Sorry it has taken me sooooooooo long to get it posted...I was so busy getting house ready for the Country Sampler photo shoot....So here it is and thank you for your patience!!!!...
Ok...The directions are fairly easy!!...I got some dinner plates while on our trip in Myrtle Beach....Ones that were completely smooth....I paid a dollar for them at Old Time Pottery....
Clean them first.....
Then I chose Americana Light Cinnamon for the base...It was what I had on hand in my paints...I put numerous coats on til I felt that they were covered well...Let dry completely inbetween coats....
I didn't paint the backs of mine....But you go ahead and do it if you want a more completed look...Make sure you paint around the edges of the plates if you choose not to paint the backs....
Then for the stripes i used yellow moon....Once again a color I had on hand...You can use any color you wish....I had thought about using a paint pen, but I hadn't used one before and wasn't sure how smooth I could do the lines, so i stuck with what I knew...A paintbrush....The yellow moon is an Americana color...You may want your yellow brighter.....
The stripes were just free hand.....I googled redware and looked at sites that sold redware to pick out the designs i liked and were easy to do....I did 8 plates...I KNEW that I wanted 4 of them with our names on them...so I only needed 4 redware designs....
The next step I did was stain mine after the lines were dry....Now that step is up to you...I wanted a subtle antiqued look....I used a sponge brush and stained them....Then I used a sock and dabbed stain all over the plate.....This took days to dry due to the build up of stain and the muggy weather....might want to leave them for a week to just dry....check everyday.....
If you decide to put a light stain on yours then it probably won't take as long.....
As soon as it's dry then its time to varnish or modge podge.....Put 5 or 6 coats on....or more if desired...
Then they are finished...These are only for decorative purposes.....I'm NOT a professional or expert on this....It was just a decorative project I made for myself and shared on here with you!!!

Hi Jen, Thanks for this tutorial. Your plates looks great.
Thanks for the tutorial, one question....does the paint scratch off easily, since the plates are smooth?

Your x-stitches are great. I have some but am afraid to antique them from all of the work I put into them. It would make them look better.
Have a great weekend!!
